A satin midi skirt can be styled in many different ways. From workwear, casual wear to formal events a satin skirt is one of the most versatile pieces of clothing. A satin skirt can be worn all year around even in the colder months of winter. As the holidays approach, I’ve been contemplating outfits appropriate for parties. I struggle with a tummy especially at 47 and am very self conscience about it. When I am choosing a party outfit, my tummy is my first concern. I have come up with the best satin skirt outfits for hiding a pooch as well as staying comfortable. My aim is to always add a touch of sophistication with a touch of personal style and with these 3 satin skirt outfits I believe I have accomplished a dressy, yet comfortable, yet festive look without breaking the bank.

Where to Find Satin Skirts:
I found all the satin skirts for these looks at Shein. They were $10 or less. You can find the exact same skirts on Amazon for $30+. Satin skirts have been around for decades now and are a basic wardrobe staple in many closets so most places like Nordstom, Dillards, H&M, Forever 21, Target etc. will have them. I will say my cheap Shein skirts are decent quality with a zipper up the side and the perfect length. They are true to size and come in so many colors. I also have a leopard print slip skirt from Amazon that is not included in this post but I highly recommend it as well. I styled it in an earlier blog post for Easy Cocktail Attire.

Tummy Friendly Satin Skirt Outfits:
No matter what body type you have, satin skirt outfits work for everyone. Disguising a tummy can be a huge feat when it comes to cocktail parties. I learned that the hard way at an event I went to this summer. I opted for a tight satin dress and shapewear. By the end of the night I was so insanely uncomfortable and felt like I looked pregnant by the end of the night. I’m sure some of you know what I’m talking about! From that event on I have been on the search for comfortable, yet flattering options for more formal occasions.
For this post, the outfit formula is chunky pieces on the top, sleek on the bottom with the mermaid shape of the silky skirt and a feminine high heel. It is the perfect balance. This silhouette is a modern twist on the typical satin skirt outfit. This look is wearable for every body shape. Satin skirts bring a touch of elegance due to their shape and texture. I’ve rounded up the best satin skirt outfit ideas that are comfortable yet chic. This particular look is perfect for the cooler months.
I will say, satin slip skirts are the furthest thing from being gut friendly. The satin/silk fabric shows every bump and curve and the cut of a midi/maxi pencil skirt gives no way to disguise a tummy bump. However, with a little effort, creativity and determination, I pulled together 3 looks that I will wear and will feel classy, put together, comfortable and free of sucking in! Wearing an oversized sweater is the perfect way to pull off a midi skirt outfit without exposing or irritating a bloated belly.

Look #1:
My chunky knit sweater cardigan is an odd choice as a top but as I was going through so many blouses and sweaters, this look just happened and I feel quite good in it. The chic off white satin skirt feminizes the cardigan and the chunky gold necklaces help pull the entire outfit together. This neutral sweater cardigan is pulled backwards on the shoulders giving more dimension to the look. I’ve linked the exact cardigan. It is from my Free People Dupes post.

Look #2:
This might be my favorite look with this gray mock neck sweater, gorgeous shade of blue satin slip skirt and snakeskin strappy heels. I found this sweater on Amazon and have been wearing it nonstop. I love the statement earrings that match the skirt. My clutch is old from Anthropologie but I linked a few really pretty clutches. My shoes are also old but I linked very similar alternatives.

Look #3:
This black satin skirt is paired with an oversized blazer. In order to up the “fanciness” of this all black look, I added black heels, a rhinestone bag and gold jewelry. I also added a lace bralette underneath. The exact bralette is linked because it is full coverage and felt more like a top. I do not feel exposed and would most likely leave the jacket buttoned. A black cami didn’t work well with this look because most camis are loose and added bulk. This all black, satin skirt fit is simple yet sexy. When in doubt, all black is always classic. I highly recommend this oversized blazer. I’ve ended up wearing it with everything!

Satin Skirt Tips:
- Satin skirts are notorious for the dreaded static cling! You may want to throw your skirt into the dryer with a dryer sheet before wearing. I always keep a travel size can of aerosol hairspray in my bag because spraying hairspray under your skirt can go a long way with keeping these skirts from getting clingy.
- Iron satin skirt with steam in your iron on the silk setting or use a steamer. Otherwise, ironing is fruitless.
- Satin skirts tend to show every bump and line. I hate wearing shape wear but something to smooth panty lines is 100% necessary in a satin skirt. I have been told that wearing belly support panties is a more comfortable way to smooth lines and bumps out without suffering through a control top under garment.
- The key to dressing up a satin skirt to cocktail attire is adding a fancy clutch and statement earrings.
I recognize this is a bit of a personal post and not everyone deals with stomach issues, meno belly, IBS or extra belly fat. However, I know I’m not alone and if I can help relieve the stress that comes with having to wear a dressy outfit without feeling incredibly self conscience and less than I will risk this post not being for everyone. It’s a disheartening feeling as a woman to be hyper focused and sensitive on an area of your body that bothers you. Ideally we would all accept our bodies as is and have fun, drink and be merry anyway but unfortunately not all of us have that ability. Finding the perfect outfit that allows you to feel confident and not overexposed is possible.
I will say, satin slip skirts are extremely versatile pieces of clothing and are not only for fancier outfits. They can be styled as a casual look as well. A graphic tee and casual sneakers are a popular way to style a satin skirt. Throwing on a jean jacket or oversized jacket is a great everyday look. However, this post is all about creating chic outfits that are comfortable and cocktail party appropriate.
While you can pair a tucked in cami with a satin skirt and heels for a gorgeous look, my satin skirt outfits are gut friendly and allow for comfortability without sacrificing style. Being ashamed of your body is a frustrating place to be and I am personally working on self acceptance and not being hyper focused on body flaws but like most women, it’s a work in progress. In the meantime, it’s mentally healthier to have outfits on hand that I know I look good in as well as feel good in.
xx, Jenni
P.S. Below I have linked quite a few Amazon Prime satin skirts that will arrive quickly. I will say that Shein has been shipping so fast lately. I have had 2 orders in the last few months and both arrived 5-7 days after I ordered.
