My oldest daughter’s birthday is next week and she’s requested a room refresh. I kind of cringe when one of my daughters mention redoing their room because you never know what they have in mind. Our home is on the more open and smaller side so whatever is done to their room will be seen daily by everyone. I like to make a few mock ups based on what I like with what they’ve shown me on Pinterest in the attempt to compromise.
When my daughter showed me her bedroom Pinterest board I was shocked at the style she was gravitating towards-it was so old fashioned! It reminded me of my generation’s grandmother’s house. The look is dark wood furniture that looks antique, moody dark rugs and ruffles with splashes of animal print and art deco. All of her ideas were very eclectic which I love but since we’re not up for new furniture in her room, I needed to work with what she has, which is white, light and a bit modern.
We agreed on option #2. I prefer option #1 because I’m always more drawn to blues and greens but the pinks in the second option are gorgeous and ultimately, I want her to have some freedom of expression in her childhood home. She’s turning 16 and I can already feel the countdown to leaving the nest has begun 😢.
Option #1: Green & Boho
I love this room! It’s a great mix of bright and fun but also a little moody. The duvet is from Amazon and very affordable and the Euro shams are Anthro. and currently on sale. I chose a hunter green velvet curtain for depth which I also have in several other rooms and get from Amazon. I love velvet curtains because they block out so much light but aren’t super heavy. These curtains come in many different lengths and are also very affordable. The fawn rug is what she already has and is such a great rug. The bouclé footstools are a nice touch and would look great at the end of the bed to serve for more seating when friends come over.

Option #2: Pink & Girly
I LOVE this rug. It’s gorgeous and doesn’t break the bank. The pink pillows are so cute and the bedding I have in my younger daughter’s room so we already know it’s plush and warm. My daughter really wants the Anthropologie full length mirror which I’ll be getting at Hobby Lobby for a fourth of the cost. Her taste in music has become quite diversified so of course I’m leaning into her Fleetwood Mac/Stevie Nicks love and found THIS awesome print! The curtains are what she already has which are a baby pink velvet with coral tassels (Opalhouse Target) but I found a similar option on Etsy plus other options that would look great.
SHOP OPTION #2:
I’ll add the photo of the actual room once we finish it! I’m quite happy with both these options and am excited to see how it all comes together! I hope you’ve been inspired to refresh a room in your home. You can make big changes without a ton of sweat equity and money. It’s amazing how changing pillows, rugs and curtains can bring a room back to life!
